Lowering Antidepressant Dosages: Before You Start

It is difficult to know how or when to taper certain antidepressants after someone has responded to a medication treatment. However, there are lifestyle interventions that can improve the chances of success before de-prescription. This is a review of methods that may help in preparation of dose reduction and buffer the impact of lowering prescribed meds.

  1.  Supplements. Although this would involve at least temporarily taking more medication, it may offer an easier stepdown from prescription medication to one that is over the counter. For instance, making sure your Vitamin D3 range is optimized (between 50 to 80 ng/ml) helps reduce depression. Other vitamins can be helpful in reducing anxiety, such as B3 and B6.

  2. Vagus nerve stimulator wearables have been shown to be helpful in reducing anxiety symptoms and improving sleep. Two of the more popular devices are the Nuropod and the Pulsetto, although these need to be used with caution for people who have a history of cardiac problems.

  3. Exercise, especially resistance training, light boxes, photobiomodulation/red and near-infrared light therapy, cold exposure such as cold showers or plunges, heat/sauna, the incorporation of religion and spirituality, and even structured breathing have all been found to be beneficial in depression.
